You may have heard me say "If you are breathing, you are doing the practice". Connecting with your breath brings you into the present moment. The past is over and is only memories at this point. The future has not happened yet. In this one breath, your are in your life, right here, right now. Being in that awareness has a profoundly calming effect on your nervous system.
Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh says "The present moment is your life".
As you may know, the breath is called Prana and translates from Sanskrit to "vital life force". Yoga teachers often lead students thru Pranayama exercises, which are formal methods used to control your breathing and your life force to achieve particular benefits. In spring Skull Shining Breath (Kapalabhati) is used to move stagnating energy, in summer Cooling Breath (Sheetali) cools your body, mind and emotions, and in fall Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana) balances doing and being and cleanses your central channel.
Below is a link to my YouTube video of Alternate Nostril Breathing.
Take a few moments to do it with me now to feel calm and centered. And then please, please, please like it and share it with someone you love. Help your loved ones feel calm, cool and collected during their week.
